Evaluation of that effort has been heavily influenced by American&#8217;s understanding of the earlier economy. By this standard the failure of attempts to build that successor economy, even one based on financial services, are obvious. As these attempts continue more attention should be paid to the social successes that anchored that earlier economy.</p>
